The Urgent Need to End Gender-Based Violence: A Call to Action

In 2023, a horrifying statistic emerged: every 10 minutes, a woman or girl was intentionally killed by a partner or family member. This tragic reality underscores the urgency of addressing the global crisis of gender-based violence (GBV). This violence, in its various forms, continues to devastate women and girls worldwide, denying them their basic human rights and safety.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a critical time to reflect, raise awareness, and take action. From November 25 to December 10, individuals, organizations, and governments unite to call for an end to gender-based violence and support survivors. This period provides an opportunity to amplify efforts and strengthen commitments toward achieving gender equality.

As the world approaches the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2025, the need for change is more pressing than ever. The Beijing Declaration, adopted in 1995, set forth a visionary framework for advancing gender equality and the rights of women and girls. Yet, despite the progress made, gender-based violence remains one of the most widespread violations of human rights.

This anniversary serves as a reminder that while much has been done, there is still much more to be achieved. The 16 Days of Activism is not only a time to honor the lives lost and the survivors who continue to fight, but also a moment to demand stronger action from leaders and decision-makers. We must hold them accountable for their commitments and ensure that policies, laws, and practices prioritize the safety and well-being of women and girls.

Ending gender-based violence is not only the responsibility of governments, but also of communities and individuals. It requires all of us to challenge harmful gender norms, promote respect, and educate about healthy, non-violent relationships. Everyone has a role to play in creating a world where women and girls can live without fear.

There is #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls. Together, we can work to end this violence and build a world where every woman and girl can live freely and safely, with their rights and dignity fully respected.

Let us use the 16 Days of Activism to take action, renew our commitments, and support survivors. The time to act is now. #EndViolence #16DaysOfActivism #GenderEquality #StopGBV #WomenRights #GirlsDeserveBetter #BeijingPlatform2025 #ActNow #TogetherForEquality
